As part of the ongoing training program implemented by the management of the Social Services Hospital to strengthen and develop the professional competencies of its nursing team, Mr. Nour Al-Masri, Head of the Hospital’s Psychiatric Department and a psychological specialist, delivered a lecture entitled “Schizophrenia: A Deeper Understanding of the Disorder — Its Causes and Modern Nursing Care Approaches.”

During the lecture, Mr. Al-Masri provided participants with a comprehensive overview of this mental health condition, which affects people in modern societies around the world. He clarified the distinction between schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder, emphasizing that schizophrenia does not mean having “multiple personalities” or a “split personality.” Rather, it is a serious, chronic mental disorder that affects a person’s thinking, feelings, and behavior.

The lecture also covered the causes and symptoms of schizophrenia, the latest psychological and nursing interventions, essential nursing care practices, and available pharmacological treatments.

In addition, Mr. Al-Masri highlighted the behavioral and ethical principles essential to caring for people with schizophrenia, emphasizing respect, empathy, understanding, and supportive care. He also underscored the importance of understanding the nature of the disorder and educating both patients and their families about its characteristics.

The lecture concluded with an open question-and-answer session, allowing participants to exchange views, raise questions, and discuss key aspects of providing informed, compassionate, and professional care to people living with schizophrenia.
